I recently joined The AI Shockwave panels in Austin, held alongside SXSW. The room was full of infrastructure investors, energy strategists, and real estate finance leaders. Not exactly my usual crowd.
But the conversation kept circling back to something that matters directly to the leaders I work with every day: the decisions being made right now about AI infrastructure will shape what AI costs, what it can do, and how it gets deployed, for years to come. And most functional leaders have no idea this conversation is even happening.
That gap is worth closing.
The Build-Out Is Real, and So Are the Constraints
AI is driving an infrastructure boom unlike anything we've seen in decades. Data centers are expanding rapidly. Power demand is surging. Grid capacity is being tested. Permitting, water access, and land use are all becoming pressure points as communities and policymakers weigh the economic upside of AI expansion against its practical demands.
These aren't fringe concerns. They're shaping capital allocation decisions right now. And they matter because AI infrastructure is not infinitely elastic, it has to be built, powered, and maintained at massive scale, in a landscape that is moving faster than the systems designed to support it.
Newer facilities face speed-to-market pressure, capital intensity, and the challenge of building for workloads that keep evolving. Older facilities weren't designed for today's power density and cooling requirements, making retrofitting expensive and complex. The challenge isn't simply "build more." It's how to build and modernize thoughtfully... at pace.
Training vs. Inference: A Distinction Worth Knowing
One concept worth adding to your vocabulary: the difference between training AI models and running them.
Training is the intensive process of building a model. It requires concentrated compute over defined periods and is largely invisible to business users.
Inference is what happens every time someone uses an AI tool: every query, every output, every recommendation. As AI gets embedded into more products and workflows, inference becomes sustained and distributed. It runs constantly, at scale, across every organization using AI-powered software.
Why does this matter to you? Because inference is what your organization is buying. And the economics, performance, and reliability of the tools your teams depend on are all shaped by how well the underlying infrastructure keeps pace with that demand. Being aware of this gives you better context when evaluating AI investments, asking questions in vendor conversations, and thinking about where your own AI roadmap is headed.
The Concerns Are Real. So Is the Opportunity.
The panels were candid about the challenges... and equally clear that constraint isn't the whole story. There was genuine optimism in the room about what AI can do when it's deployed well.
AI can also be part of the solution. Better AI tools can improve energy forecasting, identify operational inefficiencies, and help organizations make faster, more informed decisions. The same technology creating infrastructure demand is also being used to manage it more intelligently. That doesn't happen automatically, it requires intention, the right use cases, and real implementation discipline.
